Presvis Lands Dubai Duty Free

Presvis made it third time lucky on Dubai World Cup night as Ryan Moore brought him from last to first to claim the US$5 million Dubai Duty Free (G1).

Having finished second to Godolphin’s runaway winner Gladiatorus two years ago when the race was staged at Nad Al Sheba, he had no luck in running 12 months ago when coming past the post in 11th place under Christophe Lemaire.

Reunited with Ryan Moore, the jockey who has guided him to six of his previous seven wins, Presvis made amends in heart-stopping fashion.

He was slowly out the gates in his usual style and trailed the field along the back stretch as Beauty Flash and Strawberry Daiquiri led at a decent gallop.

Moore still had his 15 rivals to pass off the final bend but found a golden opportunity towards the far rail as the runners fanned out and struck for home halfway down the home stretch.

Presvis went on to score in impressive fashion from Balanchine winner River Jetez and the Michael Bell trained Wigmore Hall.

Cumani said of the winner: “Ryan always rides him like that and he was absolutely fantastic on him tonight.

“I owe this horse too much and he will head out to Hong Kong now for the QE II Cup. He’ll then go to Singapore and head home to the stud before starting out again.

Presvis, a son of Sakhee was sold by the Jamie Railton Sales Agency as a foal to astute pinhooker Will Edmeades for 15,000gns.

Shamardal colt to Andreas Lowe

Jamie Railton consigned one of the feature lots at the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale with Dirk Eisele of BBA Germany securing a quality Shamardal colt for 105,000gns. Eisele landed the attractive bay with a single bid, relegating Fiona Shaw (racing manager to Earl Mack) to the role of underbidder.

Eisele rated the Jamie Railton-consigned colt as the best he'd seen in the sale.

"He was a very athletic, Classic-type of horse," he said. "I saw him at Arqana and again here - I thought he was the best in this sale. Luckily I found someone for him.

"I had 100,000gns for him and he went up to that so quickly, we we didn't even bid. But then we decided to have one go at 105,000gns."

The colt will join trainer Andreas Lowe, who trained Mystic Lips to win the 2007 Preis der Diana.

He is the first foal out of Amandalini, a Bertolini half-sister to the Grade 1-placed Persianlux who cost GenesisGreen Stud a mere 5,000gns at the Tattersalls December Sale in 2007.

The Shamardal colt formed part of a 2-horse draft for Railton, with Ballygallon Stud’s Dylan Thomas colt out of Crystal Gaze heading to Mick Channon’s yard after being snapped up by Gill Richardson for 11,000gns.

Railton Launches New French Based Operation – The Channel Consignment

Leading British consignor Jamie Railton has joined forces with well respected Angers-based horseman Alban Chevalier du Fau to launch a new French-based sales agency called The Channel Consignment.

The Channel Consignment brings together the skills of two highly acclaimed horsemen with a wealth of global experience to produce and consign horses of all ages under one banner in France, which the pair see as complimentary to their existing businesses.

Chevalier du Fau, the son of former Chantilly trainer Emmanuel operates a breaking and pre-training centre in Saint- Lambert-la-Potherie, in Anjou. In addition, the family estate caters for mares, weanlings, yearlings and resting racehorses on more than 100 hectares of lush, rolling countryside.

“I have known Jamie for many years, having been a regular at thoroughbred sales and have always been impressed with the presentation of his horses and his professional approach to selling them,” Chevalier du Fau explained. “We became good friends and have often exchanged ideas and advice. It seems a natural progression to establish a joint consignment and it is something we have talked about for a long time, so it’s nice to see it coming to fruition.”

“In addition to preparing and consigning stock on behalf of clients, we have the facilities here in France to board mares and raise young stock. Jamie felt this will play a pivotal role in attracting British & Irish owners and breeders that are keen to take advantage of French premiums, and we have already had an overwhelming response to the new setup. Away from that obvious target market, we would like to provide a professional service to French owners and breeders as well.”

Railton hopes the new venture will be well supported by British and Irish breeders and sees several advantages for those who sell through the Channel Consignment or use the Anjou facilities to board mares. “We all know that the structure of French Racing with its well funded prize-money is one that offers long-term stability and warrants end-users paying good money for quality horses. By partnering with Alban, we can offer new and existing clients a smooth transition into the French market, headed by English and French speakers who are well known by major purchasers throughout Europe.”

Solid Trade at Horses in Training Sale

The Jamie Railton Sales Agency enjoyed solid trade at the recent Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale with German-trained winner Landero destined for a career over jumps after being snapped up by Bobby O’Ryan for 60,000gns. The one-win son of Medicean was immensely popular in the pre-parade ring prior to entering the sales auditorium and the scopey individual attracted bids from several parties before being knocked down to O’Ryan.

While Stakes performers generally failed to reach the heights of previous years, there remained good demand for young, progressive colts, particularly those that could race over middle distances and beyond.

The high-class Alan Jarvis trained Navajo Chief was a late withdrawal from the Railton draft after developing a corn, but is likely to be sold in the next few weeks, given he is a sound, quality individual that meets ratings criteria to race at Dubai’s International Carnival. Street Cry Colt Stars on Final Day of Tattersalls Book 1

A Street Cry colt out of the Barathea mare Saree proved the highlight of the 22-strong offerings from Jamie Railton during Tattersalls Book 1 when selling to Shadwell Stud for 375,000gns. A robust, attractive colt with a stallion’s pedigree, Shadwell’s Angus Gold signed for the colt after fending off strong opposition which included Paul Makin and the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Bred by Roy and Belinda Strudwick’s Ballygallon Stud, the colt is out of Grade 3 placed Saree, a sister to Group 1 winner Magical Romance who fetched a record 4.6 million guineas when sold at the 2006 Tattersalls December Breeding Stock Sale.

Shadwell also outlaid 220,000gns for an Oasis Dream colt from the Listed winning mare Capistrano Day. The colt was offered by Jamie Railton on behalf of Fair Winter Farm.

The three day sale saw 449 lots sold for 48,243,000 guineas, at an average of 107,445 guineas and a median of 70,000 guineas. Both the median and average were down on last year and it was a selective sale with a lack of buying power in the middle market

Wootton Bassett Lands French Group 1

Jamie Railton graduate Wootton Bassett made it five wins from as many starts with a brilliant all-the-way win in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp in October on Arc Day.

Ridden by top hoop Paul Hanagan, the Richard Fahey-trained youngster was quickly away in the seven-furlong contest and despite racing a bit keenly, powered away from his rivals to win with something in hand.

Bred by Colin and Melba Bryce’s Laundry Cottage Stud, Wootton Bassett is the best performer from the first crop of boom young sire Iffraaj out of the Primo Dominie mare, Balladonia.

Delighted trainer Richard Fahey said: "He's the first proper Group horse I have had since Utmost Respect, and you would have to look down the Classic route now. I knew early on that he was the best I’d ever had. We’ve had a fair few juvenile winners this season, but he’s a long way in front of them all. He has a unique blend of speed and stamina, and one mile will not be a problem next year. I put him in the Irish Guineas a while ago and I will put him in the English and French Guineas as well."

The colt was prepared and sold by Jamie Railton on behalf of Laundry Cottage Stud to Bobby O’Ryan for £46,000 at the DBS St. Leger Yearling Sales 2009

Wootton Bassett Heads 09 Railton Doncaster Graduates

Graduates of the 2009 Doncaster St Ledger Yearling Sale offered by Jamie Railton have already made a promising start to their careers, headed by impressive two-time winner Wootton Bassett (pictured right) trained by Richard Fahey. Both fillies breezed well on the polytrack Kempton surface and it was pleasing to see them find good homes.

Equine Treadmill Arrives at Darshams!

Darshams Farm has recently acquired an Equine Treadmill with variable speed and incline, adding to the high class infrastructure already on site at the Wetherden facility. The treadmill is the ideal tool for slowly building the exercise routines of both young horses and horses returning from layoffs or injury. In addition to the high speed treadmill, Darshams Farm is also equipped with an underwater treadmill, which has proved a fantastic instrument  for strengthening the hind quarters of horses with the water resistance ensuring minimal impact.

Using a treadmill for conditioning a horse offers several advantages:

  • Walking the horse on an incline is a great way of improving stamina and building muscle strength, particularly in the back and hind quarters.

  • Variety in a horse’s conditioning program allowing it to be tailored to the horse’s specific needs.

  • During the winter months horses can undertake full exercise regardless of prevailing weather conditions.

  • Not only is the equine treadmill an effective method of exercise, but also a great means of monitoring the horse during training. With the horse being relatively stationary to an observer, it is possible for the trainer to quickly observe irregularities in gait, for lameness problems to be detected or to evaluate improvements in horses recovering from injuries.

  • The treadmill belt provides a smooth, consistent surface, eliminating injuries from uneven footing. Equine treadmills have proven to be particularly useful for rehabilitation work.

Bolger Purchases Another Galileo

The master of Coolcullen has put the polish on the likes of Lush Lashes, Teofilo, New Approach, Chabal and Cuis Ghaire, all by Coolmore’s Champion Sire Galileo, in addition to breeding Irish Derby winner Soldier Of Fortune.

So it was no surprise to see a well bred Galileo filly out of the Daarshan mare Time Away catch the wily trainer’s eye. With the dam a winner of the Musidora Stakes and placed in the French Oaks, the elegant bay filly bred by Fair Winter Farm has the makings of a future Classic winner.

The daughter of Time Away had attracted considerable interest with Cheveley Park Stud the main rivals to the BBA/Bolger camp. Damietta Stakes Bound after Kempton Triumph

Two-year-old filly Damietta was one of several recent winners from the Godolphin stable, with the daughter of More Than Ready landing the spoils at Kempton at her second career start. Prepared and sold at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale by Jamie Railton on behalf of breeder Geoffrey Howard-Spink, Damietta ran with plenty of credit when getting the hang of things all too late on her debut at Goodwood. That experience held her in good stead at Kempton and she was soon tracking the leaders and went about her job well when taking the lead entering the final furlong. Connections felt she did not handle the gradients at Goodwood and that she would appreciate a flatter track. She clearly liked the surface and is progressing well with connections now eyeing a tilt at a Listed race. Out of the Gone West mare Dixie Eyes Blazing, Damietta was knocked down for 40,000gns to the bid of Blandford Bloodstock.

Breeze Up Graduate King of Sydney Lands Group 2

King of Sydney, a close relative to the crack miler Sure Blade, overhauled the vying leaders Aspectus and Querari in a thrilling finish to the Group 2 Henkel Trophy over a mile in Dusseldorf on Sunday.

The talented son of Diesis proved a successful pinhook for Jamie Railton, who ventured to Florida’s Ocala August Yearling Sale to acquire King Of Sydney for $35,000 before re-offering the handsome colt at Tattersalls 2008 Craven Breeze Up Sale where he was knocked down for 70,000gns.

Trained by Mario Hoffer, King Of Sydney made good progress from last place to lead approaching the final 100 metres to become the forty-seventh Graded/Group winner by the European Champion Juvenile Diesis, fourteen of whom have triumphed at the highest level. Sadly, Diesis died in November 2006.

King Of Sydney is the second foal of Padmore. By French Deputy, Padmore is out of the Listed Sandleford Priory Stakes victrix and Gr.2 Nassau Stakes third Double Lock, who produced the Gr.2 St James’s Palace Stakes, Gr.2 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Gr.2 Champagne Stakes ace Sure Blade to Diesis’ full-brother Kris, the Gr.3 Earl Of Sefton Stakes scorer Sure Sharp and South African Gr.3 winner Only A Pound to Diesis’ sire Sharpen Up and the Gr.2 placed Listed victrix Sure Locked to Lyphard.

Owned by Hoffmeister & Hermann-Schmitt, King Of Sydney has now won 2 of 8 starts and placed in a further 3 events including a pair of Group 3s.

Winkle half-sister heads Railton Tattersalls October draft

A half-sister to brilliant Sussex Stakes winner Rip Van Winkle is likely to be one of the star attractions of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Sale, which is set for October 6-9.

Consigned by Jamie Railton on behalf of breeder Roberto Brogi, the filly is a first crop daughter of Middle Park and Queen Anne Stakes winner Ad Valorem, and the third foal out of the Listed-placed Stravinsky mare Looking Back.

The further reaches of the family also include the high-class dual-purpose performer Alderbrook and Grade 1 winner Danish.

Unsurprisingly, Railton, who was the leading consigner at Book 1 in 2006 and sold yearlings up to 500,000gns in 2008 is looking forward to consigning the filly. Speaking from Goodwood on Wednesday, he said: "She is a very exciting yearling to have in our draft, especially given how well Rip Van Winkle won the Sussex Stakes. You'd have to think that there is still a bit more to come from him.

"She's a lovely filly and will arrive from Italy on Monday to commence her preparation for the sale."

Rip Van Winkle landed a well-deserved Group 1 victory, having pushed fellow top class three-year-old Sea The Stars in a close up second in the Eclipse Stakes, following good performances in both the Derby and Guineas from a limited preparation.

Bond Fastrac provides timely boost for Doncaster Offering

Owner Reg Bond would have been delighted to see Bond Fastrac make an impressive breakthrough at Redcar on Wednesday when taking the European Breeders' Fund Maiden Stakes over 6 furlongs. Not only is the smart two-year-old a good advertisement for Bond's stallion, Monsieur Bond, but he also provided a timely boost for his yearling half sister by Oratorio who is to be offered through the draft of Jamie Railton at the Doncaster St. Leger Sale.

Bond Fastrac had showed some promise when he made his debut at Wolverhampton last month, and clearly had come on plenty for that as he made most of the running, and in the end ran out a convincing winner. Sure to improve further from this victory, Bond Fastrac is out of the Listed winning mare Kanisfluh, a daughter of Pivotal. The Oratorio half sister to Bond Fastrac is catalogued as lot 485 of the Doncaster St.Leger Sale.

Damietta third on debut

Two-year-old filly Damietta made a solid start to her career when third in what looked a quality maiden (Markel International Fillies' Stakes) at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday.

The daughter of More Than Ready out of Dixie Eyes Blazing was bred by Geoffrey Howard-Spink and sold by Jamie Railton at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale earlier this year for 40,000gns.

A half-sister to several juvenile winners, Damietta did not help her chances by going out to her right from the stalls and it took time for the penny to drop on her racecourse debut. She was keeping on strongly when the race was effectively over and like many Godolphin horses will be better for the experience.

Damietta was third in what looked a strong race won by Beyond Desire with expensive yearling purchase Nimue runner up. The first pair both hold Group 1 entries later in the season.

Jira lands Empress Stakes

Jira gained some valuable 'black type' when landing the Listed Empress Stakes at Newmarket. Saeed Manana’s daughter of Medicean was slowly away from the stalls having received a bump under Kevin Shea and was ridden along towards the rear. But she really began to motor as they entered the dip and ran on in taking style, coming from last to first to win by a neck.

Last seen when finishing seventh in the Albany Stakes, she was returned the 15-2 chance on the July Course.

Rabbah’s racing manager Bruce Raymond said: “She ran an exceptional race on what was the wrong side at Royal Ascot in the Albany Stakes. “But she came here with a good chance and her jockey was very impressed with her. He said from three furlongs out that he knew she was going to win. She has shown a good turn on foot and has done it well, so we are delighted.”

Consigned by Jamie Railton Sales Agency on behalf of William & Robert Barnett, Jira fetched 110,000gns and is a three-parts sister to King Edward VII Stakes winner Plea Bargain and a half-sister to Dubai Time and Emirates Sports out of a winning half-sister to Zinaad and Time Allowed, herself out of the great Time Charter.

Jamie Railton will present a half sister to Jira by Galileo at Tattersalls Book 1 in 2009.

Layali Al Andalus demolishes rivals in Maiden Victory

The Mark Johnston trained Layali Al Andalus proved in a different league to his rivals when breaking his maiden at Doncaster on June 27th over 7 furlongs. The son of Halling had shown more than enough on his debut at Ayr 24 days previously to suggest he could collect a prize like this, running on well over 6f to fill second spot behind a rival thought good enough subsequently to contest RoyalAscot´s Coventry Stakes.

His pedigree indicated he would appreciate this step up in trip, as he is by Halling out of Lafite who handled a 1m2f, and he appeared to have ample physical scope for improvement.

He looked magnificent beforehand and outshone his rivals in the race, too, taking the lead at halfway, easing over towards the stands´ rail, and, when asked to increase the tempo with 2f to run, he strode clear for a comprehensive 7 length victory.

Bred by Woodhall Stud, Layali Al Andalus was sold by Jamie Railton Sales Agency for 60,000gns at Tattersalls Book 1 October Yearling Sale, purchased by John Ferguson on behalf of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed.

The Human League Completes Big Day for Channon

Impressive individual The Human League landed his maiden victory at the second time of asking, when completing a double for trainer Mick Channon at Newcastle, having earlier taken the Northumberland Plate with Som Tala.

A sizeable two-year-old, the Human League didn´t look totally happy on quick ground when third in a maiden on the July course first time up, and he was also hampered at a crucial stage. The colt relished the softer conditions this time out, showing no signs of hanging or carrying his head awkwardly, and there was much to like about this performance.

Having shown good speed from the outset, The Human League briefly appeared vulnerable when the Godolphin challenger Chaperno loomed up going well, but the son of Tobougg galloped on relentlessly to score by a comfortable two-lengths and looks up to Pattern class.

Purchased by Angie Sykes for £72,000 at the 2008 Doncaster St. Leger Sale, The Human League was bred by Colin Murfitt and sold by the Jamie Railton Sales Agency. Shamardal filly heads Guineas consignment

A fleet footed filly by Shamardal out of the Selkirk mare Kirk proved the star of a 9-strong consignment from Jamie Railton at Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale when knocked down to Dick O’Gorman for 125,000gns. The Woodcote Stud bred filly impressed many onlookers with her breeze and good looks to match.

Also selling well was a colt by first season sire Chineur out of the Unfuwain mare Silk Fan, purchased by agent Gill Richardson on behalf of Jaber Abdullah for 55,000gns. Presvis prevails after last-to-first dash in QEII Cup

Presvis, trained in Newmarket by Luca Cumani, and given a super-confident ride by Britain's champion jockey Ryan Moore, raced to an authoritative win in the HK$14 million Audemars Piguet QEII Cup.

On a turf track reclassified as yielding, Moore was content to settle Presvis in last place as Viva Macau cut out the early pace, with the local favourite Viva Pataca staying in mid-division.

Viva Macau was still in front with 300 metres left in the straight, and Presvis still last, but Moore stayed close to the rail and launched Presvis on a decisive run up the inner to run down Viva Pataca and win going away by a length at the line for his first Group One success.

Afterwards Moore, who had only arrived in Hong Kong a few hours before the meeting having ridden a Group Three winner in England the day before, said: "That went perfectly. I was happy to sit in last as the gallop was honest on that ground. I was never worried as he was handling the ground well, and when I asked him once he picked up one horse I knew he'd pick them all up."

For Luca Cumani, it was a long overdue success at international Group One level after five runners-up finishes in international races in Australia, Hong Kong and Dubai in the past 18 months.

"I love international racing, it has great prize money and great atmosphere, " Cumani enthused.

"Presvis showed in Dubai that he belonged in Group One company and he's proved himself today. We'll see how he is in a few days and decide as to whether we'll take him on to Singapore for the Cup there. Then he'll have a rest, but I'd love to bring him back here in December for the big race, the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup."

Darren Beadman on favourite Viva Pataca offered no excuses for the six-time Group One winning Hong Kong star.

"He's run his usual honest race, and 200 metres out I thought he'd win, but then along came Presvis, and that was that," he said.

Presvis, a son of Sakhee was sold by the Jamie Railton Sales Agency as a foal to Will Edmeades Bloodstock for 15,000gns. A high class performer, Presvis has netted connections in excess of £1.6 million from his 11 starts.

Footstepsinthesand Colt to Join Meehan

After turning in one of the fastest breezes of the sale it was no surprise that the near black colt by Footstepsinthesand out of Innocence attracted plenty of attention. Following a protracted bidding war with BBA Ireland’s Eamonn Reilly, Hugo Merry’s bid of 175,000 gns proved decisive. Standing alongside Merry was Brian Meehan, who only hours earlier had enjoyed success with 2000 Guineas favourite Delegator in the Craven Stakes (G3). “He's for a long-standing owner with Brian, who doesn't want to be named,” said Merry, adding, “I see Footstepsinthesand is one of the favourites to be leading first-season sire with Cashmans, and this was a big scopey type of colt. He's not precocious, but will hopefully be high-class later in the year.”

The result was a great coup for vendor Jamie Railton who had purchased the elegant colt for 20,000 gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

The colt was one of three horses sold by Jamie Railton at the Craven Sale, with an Exceed and Excel colt knocked down to Qatar based Ibrahim Slaeed Al-Malki for 18,000gns and a Green Desert filly sold to Gazeley Stud for 30,000gns.
