Wootton Bassett going to Stud

Last year's unbeaten juvenile Group 1 winner Wootton Bassett will begin his stallion career at the Haras d'Etreham in France next year.

Wootton Bassett was trained by Richard Fahey to win his first two starts, then two valuable sales races at York and Doncaster.

He finished his two year old year with an impressive half-length victory over Ti Horse in the Prix Jean Luc Lagardere at Longchamps.

Handicappers rated him the third best juvenile in Europe just behind Frankel and Dream Ahead.

At three this year, Wootton Bassett has failed to get his head in front but took a fifth place in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains and Prix Maurice de Gheest.

Fahey said: "The good looking Wootton Bassett was an extremely talented two-year-old with great speed and class, being unbeaten in five starts in only three months, he is a very tough horse."

Wootton Bassett will stand in France where he was crowned champion two-year-old.

He was one of his sire Ifraaj's record-breaking 38 first crop two year old winners.

Unbeaten Best Terms heads for Cheveley Park

Lowther Stakes winner Best Terms could be targeted at next season’s Qipco 1000 Guineas if she impresses trainer Richard Hannon in the Jaguar Cars Cheveley Park Stakes.

The speedy daughter of Exceed and Excel remains unbeaten after four starts, her York win following a game success in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes over 5f at Royal Ascot, where she held off the fast finishing Shumoos to win by a short head.

However her easy victory on her first start over 6f in the Lowther Stakes was arguably the most impressive of her short career, as she streaked away from runner up Fire Lily to score by two lengths under jockey Richard Hughes.

Hannon is confident Best Terms can extend her winning run to five in Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket on September 24, before thinking about a potential crack at the Guineas next May, for which she is as short as 12-1.

“She is very quick and she will be hard to beat in the Cheveley Park, but we will have to dip our toes in the seven furlong waters next spring probably in the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury and that should give us some idea of wether or not she will have the stamina for the Guineas” said Richard Hannon.

Hughes, who has ridden Best Terms in each of her races to date added:

“I knew that she was not just a five furlong filly, and we only went to Ascot because we always need to stay six to win the Queen Mary. We got away with it there, but the extra distance at York suited her better and she is so professional and a pleasure to ride. Sure she is small but there is nothing small about the engine under the bonnet.”

Best Terms, the best in the Lowther Stakes

York, Jaguar Cars Lowther Stakes (Group 2) 6f, 2yo fillies.

Best Terms made it four wins from four as she made all to score an impressive victory at York. She confirmed herself as one of the best and speediest juvenile fillies in training this year when winning the Lowther Stakes in fine style.

Fast away from the stalls, the diminutive daughter of Exceed and Excel was a little free early on, as jockey Richard Hughes sort to restrain the Queen Mary winner, however she soon settled. As she reached the last 2 furlongs she still appeared full of running. The Robert Bartlett owned filly extended her advantage in the final furlong to land a comfortable two length victory.

She is continuing the fantastic year the Darley sire Exceed and Excel is enjoying in both hemispheres this year.

Best Terms is still not the biggest filly and her size counted against her at the yearling sales where she was bought in for 10,000gns.

Best Terms is a half sister to two winners, including the Italian Group 3 placed horses Sunsemperchi and is out of an unraced half sister to Group 2 Lonsdale Stakes winner First Charter, Group 2 Prix Hocquart winner Anton Checkhov and Listed winner and Group 1 second Private Charter.
